Let's face it... they have high brand awareness, strong brand loyalty, and REALLY, REALLY deep pockets.
So yes, if you’re a small cosmetics brand, you’ll never beat L’Oreal at their own game. Nor should you try to.
While it’s important to have a thorough understanding of
your competitive landscape, you shouldn’t be defined by it.
Surprisingly, you’ll find that retailers are always hungry for newness and innovation. Especially, from new and emerging brands.
In fact, this is often an important lever for retailers as they seek to maintain a competitive advantage over their competition.
This is especially true as it relates to historically underrepresented businesses that tend to better cater to the needs of a more diverse customer base.
What is a Historically Underrepresented Business (HUB)?
We classify HUBs as businesses where at least 51% of the company is either women owned, minority owned, LGBTQ+ owned, or owned by those with disabilities.
Retailers are realizing the importance of fostering an inclusive assortment and supplier base to better meet the diverse needs of their consumers. In fact, many retailers have publicly committed to increasing representation within their supplier base.
As a Buyer, and someone who identifies as a woman and a minority, I’m always desperate to find HUBs to add to my vendor base.
Unfortunately I’ve had to say no to countless brands, not because they didn't have a great product, or because I didn't think their product would sell. It was simply because they weren’t ready. The sad reality is that “saying yes”, would have undoubtedly set them up for very costly failure.
To make matters worse, I found that there were very few programs that offered the appropriate level of education, resources and support to set these businesses up for success in retail.
This inspired me to start Ruby Ren Retail Consulting. As a retail consultant, I leverage my 17+ years of, hands-on, industry expertise to arm HUBs, with fundamental resources and knowledge to encourage their ongoing success within retail. The ultimate goal being, to increase representation for these groups, within the market.
